85 percent of the Norwegian population believes that good Norwegian language skills is the main criterion for integration in the Norwegian society. This is according to a new report from IMDI.
The report "Integration Barometer 2009 Attitudes to immigration, integration and diversity" presents results for 2009 and compare these with results back to the year 2005.
The report characterized the period 2005-2009 by a strong growth in the number of refugees and migrant workers while the population's attitudes have been fairly stable. Although there has been little change in this period, more Norwegians had contact with immigrants and those who have had contact with immigrants had positive attitudes towards immigration and immigrants.
IMDi note that several of the findings of the integration survey is consistent with the findings in the SSB's annual attitude survey and in the Norwegian Monitor, and can be seen in context with the findings published in "IMDi Report 9-2010 Integrated, but discriminated" and IMDi's annual report for 2009.
- Integration Barometer is a tool that makes it possible to follow trends in attitudes over time. The survey shows widespread tolerance and acceptance of diversity in terms of values and tradition. There is strong support for that immigrants should have equal rights and treated equally as the rest of the population, says Lars Wilhelmsen, Acting Director of IMDi.
The population is split in views on immigration and on the progress of integration. Many are skeptical of Muslims and visible cultural and religious symbols of Islam in public places. More than half the population believes that one should restrict Muslim immigration to Norway.
Some of the findings in the report are: - Good knowledge of Norwegian tops the list of what people think are important for successful integration, while the ability to support themselves through work occupies a solid second place. Having a common values of and to be most similar to the rest of the population, is regarded as less important. - There is a broad acceptance that immigrants can both keep their tradition and fit into the Norwegian society. - Around six out of ten fully or partially accept women wearing hijab at work, at school and as employees of state or municipality, and almost four out of ten are wholly or partially against the use of hijab on the street. - The majority do not want their children to go to school with a high proportion of pupils with immigrant backgrounds, but it is the school's results that matter most when it comes to choosing schools. - There is an increase in the percentage who believe that immigration and integration is one of the most important social issues.
