Senil Loona from the National Center for Multicultural Education (NAFO) informs about a new announcement of the so-called "scholarships to minority-language teachers for education."
The scholarship which is better known as bonuses among mother tongue teachers at 100 000 NOK (approximatly 20,000 USD) for 60 credits or 50 000 NOK for 30 credits. It is also possible to apply for larger amounts.
The Norwegian National Centre for Multicultural Education (NAFO) jumps over the financial crisis, offering large bonuses in the form of "scholarships to minority-language education for teachers" to mother tongue teachers.
The so-called scholarship that is advertised for the ninth year can only applied for by mother tongue language teachers who already have employment contracts with schools. There is no requirement or need for those who get the scholarship for a reduction in the percentage position.
The scholarship is aimed at language teachers who already have qualifications (relevant experience and practice) but lack formal qualifications (approved education). According to several official reports the municipalities in Norway are struggling to find mother tongue teachers in several languages. It is also known that most mother tongue language teachers who are already employed by the schools, have on the average much higher education than other Norwegian teachers.
It is unclear how NAFO intends to solve the problem of shortage of mother tongue teachers by offering bonuses to those who are already employed and have work experience. In order to shed light on the issue, Morsmal.org talked with a teacher who received a scholarship before:
How much did you get as a scholarship? - I received a grant of 100,000 and had to apply for free bilingual web-based courses online. Altogether I spent 1500 on the books, the rest became a kind of bonus because I worked in 100% position all the time, says Carlos (fictitious name) from Chile to morsmal.org.
Is it not difficult to work while you taking this education? - No, none of those who received scholarships at my municipality applied for leave or to reduce the position. This is because the teaching is mainly web based and there are some lectures in the weekend, says Carlos.
Who can apply for the scholarship? - Only those who are already working in 100% position in schools can apply for the scholarship. The entire application process is through the school counselors in the community. They have good contact and know the counselors in NAFO who distribute the grants, said Carlos.
Morsmal.org tried to get a comment from the National Center for Multicultural Education (NAFO), which administers the grant scheme in partnership with the school owners, but failed to get in touch with senior adviser Senil Loona.
Deadlines: 15 March 2012 is the deadline for the school administration to submit an application to the school owner 15 April 2012 is the deadline for school owners to submit an application with the applicants list to NAFO
