A group of Sri Lankans was protesting against the Norwegian authorities outside the Norwegian embassy in Colombo on Friday. The protesters claimed that child welfare service in Norway forcibly removed Norwegian Tamil children from their parents.
The group believes that the Norwegian child welfare exposes Tamil children of rape, slavery, and that they are refused to speak their mother language. Watch video from the demonstration here on morsmal.org
A group of Sri Lankan Tamils who are based in Norway, held a demonstration outside the Norwegian embassy in Colombo Friday, according to several newspapers in Sri Lanka.
One of the protesters, T. Anantharajah, told the local media that his three children - ages 12, 10 and 8 - had been taken away by force, without a valid reason. Anantharajah also claimed that the victim parents from at least 60 Tamil families will soon launch a hunger strike in Oslo against the Norwegian authorities.
The Norwegian Embassy in Sri Lanka denies the charges.
- To place a child in child welfare care is a serious step, and can be used only when serious neglect or abuse had been documented, said the embassy.
The embassy dismiss also the other accusations from the protesters, denying also that Tamil children are not allowed to speak their mother tongue.
The demonstration came months after two Indian children, who were taken away from their parents by Norway's child welfare service on grounds of "emotional disconnect", returned to India after being kept in foster care for almost a year, reports the Hindu.
A press release from the Foreign Ministry in Norway states that there have been a number of cases where the act of child protection was applied to take care of Tamil children because of neglect. These cases had received great attention in Sri Lanka, reports ABC News.
- We also know that it has been notified of a demonstration, and that the embassy was prepared for it. We have not heard anything about the demonstration on Friday, said the UD's spokesman.
