Not everyone is able to read plain text. "News in Pictures" is a pilot project for those who have difficulties reading plain text. This is an easy to read newspaper with graphic signs and symbols, to make news available to everyone.
The main target groups for the new newspaper are groups such as dyslexia, language minorities, or others with reading difficulties.
"News in Pictures" will publish every week two to three news articles at http://nyheteribilder.no A specialist in education has selected the graphic characters to make the news articles easier to read and understand. The newspaper also offers a Text To Speech application which reads up the news for the site's visitors.
There will also be developed school tasks to each news article which could be used in teaching, and may make it easier for readers to understand the text. The news will be selected and prepared by a journalist from the easy to read weekly "Klar Tale" (Clear Speech).
The main target groups for "News in Pictures" are people with a need for alternative and/or augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and who cannot read plain text. Other people with cognitive disabilities and/or major reading difficulties will also benefit from the newspaper.
The pilot project "News in Pictures" was developed by the "Klar Tale" (Clear Speech) Foundation which has developed new solutions in cooperation with Normedia AS ISAAC Norway, Haug school, Nordvoll school and Haukaasen school. The project is supported by the Norwegian Research Council's program IT Funk & Education Directorate.
There will be conducted a user survey in connection with the preparation of "News in Pictures." Which will show how readers relate to the newspaper and its content.
